If you have lived in Arlington for five to eight years or so you should be familiar with Stumpy's original location. It is now called Milos. According to the owner Will Thorn it has been open about a year and a half and is going strong. It is open 7pm to 2pm seven days a week except during Cowboy games. The bar has had a complete overhaul including the bathrooms, for those of you who remember the old stumpy's bathrooms, and is now has the feel of an upscale club with a little bit higher but still reasonable neighborhood bar prices. A pint of domestic draft beer is $3.50 as is domestic bottle beer. Mondays has $3.00 call drinks, Tuesdays have $2.50 well drinks and the Thursday through Saturday special is $3.00 call drinks up until 11pm. The long dark wooden bar is really nice and gives a mellowness to the bar. There are booths, tables with stools and tables with comfortable easy office type chairs. One pool table. A DJ plays a variety of music Tuesday through Saturday with karaoke on Sundays. It has a late crowd so doesn't really get going until about 10:30pm or so but by 11:15pm the bar is normally packed.

The new location of Stumpy's is a much better building than the original but the night I went, there was nothing going on a all. The band was a no show and completely killed the night for the club. I was not able to talk to the owner so maybe another time. It is my understanding there is normally a good crowd when the band shows up so I will visit there again.

This club has got to be one of the longest running topless bars in DFW if not in the whole state of Texas. I spoke with Dwight one of the managers and he informed me that this is the original Baby Dolls and it has been at this location for over 35years. It was rated last year by the TABC for highest liquor sales and least amount of tickets as number one in Tarrant County and Number ten in the whole state of Texas. The Club is open from 11am to 2am Monday through Saturday and 12-noon to 2am on Sundays. The cover is an amazingly low $1.00 until 7pm then $3.00 after that, seven days a week. It has six stages, one main stage with five other stages scattered around so when up, each dancer makes the full six stage circuit before coming off. I sat down at a table and it was nine minutes before a waitress asked me for my drink order and it was a full thirteen minutes before the first dancer stopped by to sit with me. Not real fast but well with in an acceptable time. As it was still pretty early I ordered an ice coffee no sugar and was charged $4.25. A bottle of domestic bear is $5.50 and shots start around $7.50 then go up from there. Not cheap but standard titty bar prices. It is not one of the bigger topless bars around so consequently it does not have a VIP-room due to the lack of space. Don't get me wrong, the club has plenty of seating with an abundance of hot sexy dancers to go around. And hot is an understatement. I saw quite a few girls that you could say had Playboy potential. I spoke with one little hottie for example, stage name Quin that came over to my table with an ass that took my breath away.
All and all this club has the best looking women of any other titty bar in the mid-cities area. Possibly in the whole DFW area.

Just about anyone in DFW who rides a motorcycle is familiar with Rick Fairless and Strokers on Harry Hines in Dallas. Sooner or later I'll be doing a review on Strokers but for the last three years Ricks ex wife Tina has owned a small bar in Arlington named Marie Reds. This is a fairly small place and makes a nice local neighborhood dive bar but in good weather it has the potential to be a great biker bar due to the very large backyard it has. With the backyard the club can accommodate a large crowd of partiers and her parties normally consist of a band and Barbecue with all the fixins cooked by her now boy friend Andy who invented the club's signature shooter-shot called a Bad-Andy. It consists of equal parts Jack Daniels Black and Kamora (Kalua like coffee liquer). I tried one, it was very tasty but a few of them would definately do you in. She sells not a pint but a 20oz draft beer for only $2.50 and bottle domestic beer is also $2.50.
While Tina was working at the old Iron Horse Factory she would bartend on Saturday nights for her dad who ran a bar just down the street. She saw this place worked a deal with the then owner, changed the name and Marie Reds was born. She said they are planning a reunion of old Iron Horse workers sometime in June of this year.
I sat and talked with Tina and Andy for quite awhile and found them very engaging and just good people with some great stories. Definitely the type of people needed to run a good neighborhood dive bar. My favorite type bar of course. I am going back tomorrow night for two birthdays parties with food and a band. I will let you know how that turns out.

  • Marie Reds next night
I went back to Marie Reds the next night. This night the backyard was packed with people and bikes. There was barbecue by Tina's boyfriend Andy with all the fixings plus a really good band called Pull My Finger. I must say I do like this bar. Andy showed me one of three bikes he owns, a chopped hard tail that he built himself a couple years ago but I swear it looks like it came right out of the sixties before there was old school. Tina told me they have a birthday party every month with a band and barbecue. I definately plan to be there.

Every Saturday night Paul Sexton and DFW Open Mics stages a poetry open mic at the Mochalux Coffee and Tea Company from 8pm to 11pm. I spoke with Paul and he said they have been at this particular venue for a year and a half now. The coffee house has the usual Starbucks type of fair at about the same prices though I was surprised that when I asked for just a plain cup of Jo there was none made and so he had to make some Americana. But I did not go there for the coffee which was pretty good by the way. I went there for the poetry and pros but got pleasantly surprised. There was almost half as many singer song writers on acoustic guitar as there was poets. There was even a couple of original hip-hop type rappers with the music set up on their laptops that they would plug into the PA system. All in all there was about 20 entertainers which was also about half the audience. The poetry ranged from depressing to boring-mundane to spectacular. One cute short haired girl named Shanna read a short poem and then read an original Dark Fairytale that was excellent and very entertaining. Later I spoke with her and she told me that the dark fairy tales is her specialty. "Dark not to be confused with Disney" as she put it. The big surprise was the music. A few very entertaining singer song writers with their guitar. The finally was a girl that goes bye the name of Emiline. She plays a portable Yamaha piano and has a very pretty but kinda haunting voice that moves the emotions. Paul told me he does other open mics but has scaled back a little lately in preparation for the release and promotion of his new book, what he calls a post modern poetry novel titled "Her Soul Bled Out". I attended the book release party at Mochalux and plan to check out this poetry and spoken word venue more often.
